We are proud to have Johanna Nenander as our Sustainability Coordinator
Studio Stockholm marks its commitment to sustainability appointing Johanna Nenander as Sustainability Coordinator.
We at Studio Stockholm Arkitektur are proud to have Johanna Nenander as our Sustainability Coordinator. Johanna has been with Studio Stockholm for seven years and has more than ten years of experience as an architect, specializing in transformation and renovation projects. She has led numerous initiatives where preservation, flexibility, and reuse have been central themes.
Sustainability has for a long time been a natural part of Studio Stockholm’s DNA – not as a separate discipline, but as an integrated aspect of our work. Our projects demonstrate that sustainability is about more than material choices and technology – it is a business critical matter that can encompass legislation, financing, and the strategic development of properties. But, of course, it is also about creating vibrant, inclusive, and responsible urban environments.
Together with our clients, Studio Stockholm transforms existing properties into places that contribute to the life of the city. A clear example is Fenix in Hagastaden – a project that both strengthens the city’s social life and reduces climate impact. Together with the client and the city, we chose to preserve the building’s frame and structure instead of demolishing it while implementing additions that have lasting qualities. The result creating wonderful spaces, a completely new kind of office concept designed to stand the test of time – aesthetically, functionally, and sustainably. Another example is Natur & Kultur, a project with a strong sustainability focus where the building’s cultural and historic values played a central role in the design.
Projects such as Återbrukskontoret for Fabege and Jernhusen’s head office in Stockholm – where 98% of all materials and furnishings were reused – show that reuse is not only good for the environment but also adds history, character, and authenticity to a space.
In her new role as Sustainability Coordinator, Johanna will lead and further develop Studio Stockholm’s strategic sustainability work and methodologies – with a focus on circularity, climate data, and early-stage decision-making, where we have the greatest potential to make a real impact.
“My interest in sustainability is closely intertwined with the very foundation of architecture – the experience, connections, and qualities of space. What makes us feel comfortable in an environment? What moves us? What makes us love a place or a room? These are the most critical questions for creating truly long-term sustainable architecture,” says Johanna.
One project she highlights in particular is Sveavägen 50 / Moraset 1 (Petit Palä) – a late 19th-century building that has been given new life through careful renovation and reuse. Here, the team has worked consciously with materials and color to emphasize the building’s existing qualities and rich diversity.
“The built environment is a resource and a material bank. We need to become better at documenting materials and performance – and, above all, extending the life of what already exists,” Johanna adds.
We are delighted that Johanna is taking on this important role and continuing to advance our sustainability efforts – with the same curiosity, quality, and long-term perspective that define everything we do at Studio Stockholm.
